Oo, he's a nasty piece of work is Weedler, a bootlegger and a moonshiner whose rough nature finds quick satisfaction through his rough knuckles. He is an excellent example of the darker side of life in the Great Swamp, where the struggles of survival are based on what little of value can be dredged from the muddy bottoms of bogs and marshes. Still, even the hardest hearts can learn to love and he has found a poisoned version of it in the equally sour character of his kommon-spouse, Shillie, one whose sharp tongue is a good match for his own.
