The Elflings

I was ten years old in 1983 when Jim Henson’s “The Dark Crystal” was released and to this date it remains perhaps the greatest influence in my life as an artist and creator of interactive effigies. Whether directly or indirectly, the fantastic detail of Brian Froud’s creature design can be witnessed in much of the work displayed here in our Etsy shop…

Recently reimagined in the brilliant Netflix series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”, the Gelflings have seen their original backstory embellished ten-fold as well as the number of distinct characters, all ranging from a variety of tribes and families which further celebrate the diversity of their race and culture. It’s understandable, then, that Sara and I have found renewed enthusiasm to further build on this diversity in our own art and bring a particularly exceptional level of creativity and quality to this new range of marionettes, an unashamed tribute to the wonder and beauty of the world of Thra as imagined by Mr Henson, Mr Froud and the incredible team of visionaries that helped them to realise it.

Looking over these new works, you will notice we’ve given ourselves deliberate license to exaggerate and further explore the diversity of the Gelflings by expanding the palette of colours and texture, reconstructed jewellery and repurposed objets-de-art, to create completely unique and individually-realised characters who would fit seamlessly into the growing mythology of Thra and Her many creatures.

Fantasy: All things Magical and Mystical!

I’ve always found myself inspired by the mythic world-building of fantasy and the millions of creatures and characters dreamt into being to populate these imagined spaces. An intimate escape from the everyday routines of mundanity, fantasy is a door into something out-of-this-world where history and mythology collide to create brave, new Worlds of discovery. For anyone who has shared a love for the otherworldly, the fantastic and the fey, you are welcome to wander here a while among our own fabulous friends and fictions. Never stop dreaming!
